Grammar rules when using Spanish months of the year and seasons

Now that we know our Spanish months and seasons vocabulary, at least in terms of the words and pronunciations, let’s delve a little deeper into how exactly to use the months in Spanish and the seasons in Spanish

You may have noticed in the above tables that neither the months nor seasons were capitalised in the Spanish language columns. Two of the most commonly asked questions when learning this vocabulary subject are “do months get capitalised in Spanish?” and “do seasons get capitalised in Spanish?”. The answer in both cases is no, as neither months nor seasons are capitalised in Spanish language. That’s slightly different to English, where months are capitalised, while seasons are also uncapitalised.

Another major grammar question about months in Spanish is “do months have gender in Spanish?” The answer is yes, months in Spanish do have gender and that gender is always masculine. However, it is not usually necessary to use an article with months in Spanish. In other words, you can just say “el tercer mes del año es marzo” (“the third month of the year is March”), rather than saying “el marzo”.

As for the seasons of the year, all of these are masculine except for “primavera”, or “spring”, which is feminine. In this case, the seasons in Spanish do usually require the article, for example, if you say “vamos a la playa el verano que viene” (“we’re going to the beach next summer”). The exceptions to that grammar rule, the cases where the article may be left out, are usually when the season comes after the verb “ser” or after the prepositions “en” or “de”.
