What to do in Madrid this summer

Have you heard the expression From Madrid to Heaven? It means there is no other place better or once you see Madrid, heaven is the next best thing. But besides this, this time of year reminds me of blue skies as summer is the perfect time to enjoy Madrid day or night.

Let’s start with the music festivals, as summer would not be the same without them. I recommend three which you can go to in Madrid although there are plenty more to cater for every taste.

Botanical Garden nights.

A must for music lovers of excellence in a delightful green setting that allows the public and performer closer intimacy. This musical edition includes great singers such as Jane Birkin, Macy Gray, Diego el Cigala and many more. Botanical Gardens from the 20th June to the 31st of July.

Rio Babel

If you prefer music festivals that are eclectic, fun and you can dance, this is your thing. You can watch many entertainers from the Hispano scene such as Bud Bunny and his Puerto Rican Latin trap style. Love of Lesbian and their indie rock or the Uruguayan song-writer Jorge Drexler. Venue Feria de Madrid 4-6 July.

Universal Music Festival.

The Teatro Real opens its doors to a festival that is not opera.  It includes Los Secretos, Jamie Collum, José Mercé and Tomatitos as well as others. An unforgettable and unique experience to enjoy the best music in an unrivalled setting. Teatro Real 5th-31st July.

For cinema lovers there is also a great selection of good films in open-air cinemas. We recommend two that show films in original version with Spanish subtitles. A refreshing option for summer nights.

Cibeles de Cine

In the glass gallery of this iconic building we can watch classical and cult films, as well as the most recent box-office ones. You can enjoy a drink at the bar before the film starts screening. Venue Edificio CentroCentro 29th June to 9th of September.

Terraza Magnética

It returns with its evenings film series and concerts. This year the programme will revolve around comic language. Venue La Casa Encendida 22nd-June-1st September.

Whatever you decide to do, a concert or movie, don’t forget to share your experience with other people and practice your Spanish.

And an extra thing you can do!
